2010 NARI Contractor of the year (COTY)
Commercial Exterior
The porch created by Sauri replaced an old, poorly designed two-level deck, which did not lend itself to the outdoor lifestyle of the clients. Reusing the framing of the existing deck and with minimal waste, Sauri designed a larger, upper deck, opening from the living room/breakfast nook space of the house and screened in on three sides. Sauri designed a soaring butterfly roof, which rises to 16 feet at its maximum height, well beyond the adjacent roof heights of the house, and allows sunlight to flood the porch and the house as if there were no roof at all.

Residential Exterior
Sauri's second award-winning residential exterior included a large outdoor patio and entertainment area created in formerly unusable space beneath the parking deck of a five-story modern house. The house sits on a lot which slopes down from the street at a nearly 45-degree angle so that three stories of the house are above ground from the street and another two stories are hidden below the hill. Beneath the parking deck, which connects the road and the main (3rd) floor of the house, Sauri created a beautiful stone patio, digging out and installing a two-tiered retaining wall covered in flagstone to resemble a bench, and incorporating and lighting the wooden piers of the deck into the overall design. He built flagstone steps into the hill, running down one side of the parking deck to allow access to the new patio and gravel-floored storage space underneath the deck. He and his team opened the existing brick wall of the house to insert a full glass door from the second floor office out to the patio space.

Historic Renovation
Sauri's third project was the renovation of an historic home built in the early 19th century. Sauri and his team removed an historically insensitive addition from the mid 1980s and added a new three-story addition in keeping with the historic significance of the house. The addition incorporates an enlarged and modernized kitchen and family room on the first floor, daughter's bedroom and full master suite with walk-in closet, luxury bath and upstairs laundry room on the second floor, and a finished office/play area on the third floor. Sauri brought back historically accurate crown moldings, floor finishes and paint colors. On the outside he added a wrap-around porch and changed the siding from a tired beige to a rich Williamsburg "Booth Bay Blue," in keeping with historic era the house represents.

ROBERT SHIELDS INTERIORS
The need to expand and grow…on tight budget and a tighter timeline. Our client, a respected interior designer, knew what he needed from his space – minimalist, white and clean, with impeccable drywall, paint and finishes. The former tenant left it, at best, totally destroyed. Our scope was to peel back layers and years of poor finishes, erect walls, drywall, re-hang doors and leave a clear, clean palette. In short, we had to assure the flow and flawlessness of the palette for our client to work his magic.

Entire House Under $250,000
RESIDENCE IN SILVER SPRING, MD
Even with two children and a third planned, the homeowners did not want to drastically change the footprint of their existing home. The second floor was insufficient and poorly conditioned by inadequate insulation and ancient HVAC. Their kitchen was tiny and dimly lit. For "Green" construction, we counseled them to focus on conditioning a tight building envelope: insulation, HVAC and windows. Two large dormers allowed a complete re-work of 2nd story floor plan, reasonable kitchen addition, new windows and exterior doors throughout, insulation, paint, hardware, custom moldings in living room, gorgeous new front porch to expand their living space.

D'ACQUA
Two famous DC chefs were looking to open a true seaside Italian restaurant: fresh fish displayed for customers to select and enjoy,
with vintage wine and Tuscan ambiance to enhance the dining experience. We were asked to transform this former infamous address into a new, yet Old World, space for fine DC dining. |

Residential Exterior under $100,000
HOME IN MCLEAN, VA
A fun and friendly family of five. A home that is functional and beautiful on the inside. A great backyard for kids and adults. And
unfortunately, zero curb appeal. This tired and lifeless facade needed a complete new direction. So, we were brought in to create a hint of European charm in the middle of this unremarkable Virginia red brick front. |
